If the car is stolen, documents left in it can be used by the thief to impersonate you! Keep NOTHING in the car, rather in your wallet.

You do NOT NOT NOT keep that certificate of title in the car. YOu want to keep that in a safety deposit box, or a very, very safe filing cabinet at home, away from children and animals. Preferably someplace fireproof.

You keep your registration and your insurance card, in the car.

Like the others have already said....always keep the registration and proof of registration.

I would like to add though...it is a good idea to keep a disposable camera and paper with pencil/pen at all times. In the event you get in an accident, you will be at least be able to take photos of the accident and property damage. This could possibly be used in court or to argue a case. The paper and pen would be to get their names, numbers, and their insurance companies just in case you need them. Don't always depend on the Police Departments.

The registration and title are two different things. Absolutely you need to keep the registration in the car but definitely do not keep the title in the car. If someone were to steal the car and the title was in it, they could forge a sale of your vehicle and get it retitled in their name.
