Venom asked: Part I.
I was told that even if I got a car at a very good deal i.e. at a car auction I would have to pay state tax on the blue book value on the vehicle when I register it, not on what I actually paid. Is this true? (BTW- I am in the state of California). If you can direct me to a California Legal code that specifies this that would be great.
Part II.
If the vehicle was acquired for free. Do you still have to pay state tax on the vehicle when you register it?
PartIII.
Is it legal to pay state tax on something that you didn’t buy?
(This is in reference to Part II. Again- This is the State of California). If you can direct me to a California Legal code that specifies this that would be great.)

David V asked: I live in California.
I want to transfer ownership of my vehicle. I own it outright, and have a title that expired along with the registration, but when I re-registered my car, I didn’t get a new title.
I see on the DMV’s website, it says there is a fee to replace “most items” - am I missing something? How do I get my title, so I can transfer ownership of my car?
I still have the title, but it says that the registration expired earlier this year.
But the title is still valid?

davidw5748 asked: I hope you can give me some advice on this! I live in California. My vehicles interior was vandalized, and while I know exactly who did it, I have no proof, and cannot take them to civil court to recover the repair costs. I have gone to my insurance company, and they say that the damage is worth more than the vehicle, and that they wish to declare it “salvage.” I’m not sure what this means, but I am afraid it might give me
problems in the future, if not with my insurance rates, then possibly with registration fees, etc. The vehicle works perfectly and is of course safe to drive, the only damage is superficial and comsmetic; someone took a knife to the interior. I can easily spend $40 on carseat covers.
Can you tell me what kind of consequences I can expect if they declare this vehicle salvage? Also, why they are doing it, and if there is a way to stop it?

rome_spqr asked: I read recently that 47 % of cited / stopped Drivers in California have NO License, NO Insurance, and NO Registration for the
vehicle (of that 47 %, over 92 % were illegals). I am just wondering what the penalties are if you are caught driving without car insurance?

Reading comics asked: So the car needs smog repairs, i only have the $ for registration fees right now, so I have the money order for that , its ready to be mailed in, but this time the letter wasn’t from the California DMV, but from the state franchise board collection agency because my registration was about half a year late and they sent it to collections, how will I be sent a registration sticker in the mail to stick to my car ? so that I am allowed to drive my car with no hassle now that I have paid the registration fee?The money order was to be made out to vehicle registration collection of Ca, not to the DMV ? So now what? Should I just mail the money order to the DMV with their name on it instead? Also If your car needs smog repair, and you just mail in the registration fee but have not gotten it smogged yet what then?

Mark C asked: I am active duty military and I am currently stationed in New Jersey. I was stationed in Louisiana for the past two years. Both of my cars are registered there. Both my wife (who is a civilian) and I have a California drivers license (this is my home of record and where I consider myself a resident of). We have New Jersey car insurance. Do I HAVE to register my cars here even though we are not residents?
