How do I get my vehicle’s title?
David V asked:

I live in California.
I want to transfer ownership of my vehicle. I own it outright, and have a title that expired along with the registration, but when I re-registered my car, I didn’t get a new title.
I see on the DMV’s website, it says there is a fee to replace “most items” - am I missing something? How do I get my title, so I can transfer ownership of my car?
I still have the title, but it says that the registration expired earlier this year.
But the title is still valid?

Titles do not expire. What did you do with your title? That is how you sell a vehicle, by the ownership papers, which is the title. If you have lost your title somehow, you will have to apply for a lost title and pay the fee to replace it.

Huh? Titles don’t expire… registrations expire, but not titles.
Check with DMV… you have to go in and take whatever paperwork you have… you can’t do this online.

When you renew your registation, you don’t receve a New Title. You only get a new registration and sticker. The title you have is what you will give to your buyer, signed in the seller section. Also do not forget to get the buyers information for the Release of Liability, always do one, and keep copies for your records.
