How come I can’t schedule a drivers permit test?

I tried to schedule one online and on the phone, but it only allows a drivers liscense or vehicle registration. Do I have to just go to the DMV and wait to take the test? I live in Southern California

   Make your appt. for a drivers LICENSE. The permit is part of the license process.
   Also be aware of the closures of all DMV’s - the first and third Fridays of each month.
   DO NOT go to any DMV without an appt. With the CA budget in shambles, you’ll incur a long wait. You can also check wait times for each field office online.
