Car registration in california?

enviroh asked:

Can anyone give me any information on my situation? I moved from Missouri to california Nov last year. The car that i came with was a replacement vehicle for a previous vehicle that had been declared a total loss in an accident in May of last year. My registration for my current vehicle shows that i only paid 200 dollars in taxes. This is because i received a tax-waiver through my insurance company that way i would not have to pay the whole amount of taxes again (i had paid 1300 for the previous car). Now that i have moved to CA, they want me to pay 1300 again…surely sholdn’t i be paying less than that?

When you register a vehicle for the first time in the state of California, you need to have it inspected and you need to pay taxes based on the amount the vehicle is worth according to the source the state uses to establish worth, or what you paid for it, which ever is the higher figure.

You will have to pay whatever they establish as due on the vehicle, regardless of how you got it or what happened in MO.
