Can I renew my registration if the car is not in my name?

kayjay asked:

I am making payments on a car, but I bought it with a co-signer and the vehicle is in her name. Would I still be able to renew my registration if she not present at the DMV with me? Also, do I need to have insurance to renew the registration? I live in California in Los Angeles County.

    Yes, to both questions.

You just put the insurance info on the registration application.

You typically need a signed power of attorney from the owner of record to get a registration renewed, and I believe california does require proof of insurance.

You should be able to just mail in the payment with a photocopy of your proof-of-insurance… or you can just take this down to your dmv and renew it.. most people do not own their vehicle.. you don’t need to own the vehicle to renew the registration.. only to get a new title.. but you WILL need proof of insurance, sometimes a proof of vehicle inspection, and your old registration.

yes but you need a note from the person who the title is in their name….. at least in Texas that works…. :)
